Remembering the sweet old times!!!!
I hadn’t had interesting things for awhile now in my blog .. but this is close to ex-home (Malaysia) and I’m sure most of you peeps out there who were born around 1989 until 1995 will feel the immense cosy-feeling and snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug after you see these pictures.
1) Literal translation is known as “ice-popsicles”. It was the kids favourite thing back then (not sure about now)!! It’s really a must-have during school days because of it’s invigorating factor and sweetness. Schools in Malaysia screams hot, humid and just plain damn sweaty. I will always buy one.
Basically it’s flavoured syrup-water filled inside a cylindrical plastic and finally, frozen. I remember it was sold for RM0.20 when I was 7 years old in the school’s canteen (tuckshop); then RM0.30 when I was 9; then finally, RM0.50 when I was 12. Inflation? Today, after 8 years, I wonder if it’s RM1 for one.
Next up!!
2) I don’t know the actual name for this :( But if you do, please let me know!!!!!!
This is another small snack for us kids back then. I do sound very old saying that.. damnit. Anyways, it’s basically hardened flavoured icing-cream topping the crunchy biscuit underneath. It’s about the size of an almond nut and it’s very addictive. Cheap, sweet, small bite size and easy to trick encourage kids with.
4-fold-paper game.
3) Enough of food, now it’s paper games! I am sure many of us know how to fold aeroplanes and make floating boats from paper but THIS! This is a like a do-or-dare-or-tell game!! Basically you fold the square piece of paper into what’s shown above and you flip symmetrically anyhow you wish and each side will have something you need to do/tell. Our favourite past time! No cost, fun and addictive.
Reminder to all who are reading this: THERE WERE NO iPODs, iPHONE, YouTube, iPADs back then. There were only the occasional ice-cream bicycles from the ah pek and “Snakes” from Nokia 3310 which brings me to my next thing..
“ Snakes” - WHO STILL REMEMBER THIS!!!????
Now, moving on to the first mobile phone I had:
4) The awesome shell-hard almost-water-proof-shock-proof Nokia 3310!! I remembered vividly! I was 8 years old at that time and my dad had to work on Saturday mornings so he puts me in my grandma’s house since my mum was also working (work hard to earn money to feed me wth). He gave me the Nokia 3310 with a 011 number (old number) for my personal use, to call him in case of an emergency.
“Call me if you need anything!” – dad’s exact words.
“You give me this phone ah?”
”Yes, this is now yours”
Compared to my mum’s Nokia 1600, mine is AWESOME! Hers even had an antenna and weighs like 2kg!!!!!! Heck its battery is bigger than Apple’s iTouch!!!! And my mum’s didn’t have “Snakes”! HAO CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT “SNAKES” back then!!!!
Anyways, my phone dropped, knocked, flew, swam and cracked open crabs. It was the toughest phone ever!! I once dropped it from the 1st floor down the stairs and everything came scattering-pop out. The back case, the cover, the battery, even the SIM card!!! Relaxed, I popped everything back on and it was working just fine!! “Snakes” was still functioning for my game. I had an impressive top-score which I now forget too!
I had it for 2 years! Good times.
Moving on, last one for food:
5). Very self-explanatory, it is what it is!!! Very tasty and addictive!!!
And now this!!!
Fishing-game!!!
6) THIS IS THE BEST!!!! I can’t believe there’s a picture of this! I totally forgot about this game!! I think my dad bought this for my sister and I when we were little. It’s basically two ruler-length rods with a magnet attached to each end of the strings. The gadget rotates the individual fishes altering the mechanism to open-and-close their mouth. And each of the fishes have magnets in their mouth. The idea is to compete who can “attract” the most fish.
It was brilliant!!!!!! Ahhh, makes me want to get this now! See?!! Kids around 5 or 6 should be playing this instead of the iPad!!!
…
7) This is probably done by me only but you never know and can be sure, since there’s a picture for this, I assume a lot of people do this too.
Listening to the Darth Vader voice or robotic voice depending on how you make the sound when you stand in front of a moving fan. I used to do this EVERYTIME when I was little. After my shower I would do this for like 15 minutes to dry my face and my hair.
Life~
These were the things I grew up with, and in this instance, they make me realise it’s these little things that made me who I am today. wth. But seriously, you don’t hear little kids playing this (picture below) do you?
All they talk about today is Angry Birds, Modern Combat and The SIMs on Facebook.
I reckon it’s a new era where the fast-paced advancement in technology has taken away the simple things and fun in life; just like there are no more squat-toilets nowadays. Wth. But it is sweet reminiscing the things we did back then. I DO sound very old now.
Lastly,
Now that I think about it, my Nokia 3310 is not bad at all.
Not bad at all!
Old times, JOsh
Hardened-cream biscuits FTW !!! and the fan thing is so cool! i'm already doing it in front of my niece so she can learn :D :D
